Living with Down syndrome brings its own set of strengths, challenges, and opportunities. With the right support, individuals with Down syndrome can lead fulfilling, independent lives, actively participating in their communities. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plays a vital role in making this possible by funding tailored supports that promote independence, skill-building, and inclusion. Down syndrome is a genetic condition that affects intellectual development, physical growth, and sometimes health. While every individual with Down syndrome is unique, many benefit from support in areas such as communication, motor skills, learning, and social interaction. As they grow older, these needs often evolve.
The NDIS funds a wide range of supports that cater to the needs of people with Down syndrome, including assistance with daily tasks, therapies, and community participation. As of 31 March 2025, there were 11,699 active NDIS participants with Down syndrome, making up about 1.63% of all participants in the scheme. With early support, many children with Down syndrome can live an independent life in future. That’s why timely access to Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) under the NDIS is so crucial. Without this, children may miss out on support during the critical early years when therapy and family support
make the greatest impact. The earlier the support begins, the better the outcomes, especially for independence and long-term participation. The NDIS provides individualised support packages that can include speech therapy, occupational therapy, support workers, transport and life skills programs. These supports aren’t just about managing disability, they are about
building capacity. The NDIS also provides funding for equipment and environment adjustments that improve daily living. For people with Down syndrome, this could include communication aids, bathroom modifications for safety, devices that support independence in hygiene and mobility. These personalised supports NDIS participants with Down Syndrome to live a life of independence and dignity.
