Community participation is an important part of living independently for people with disabilities. Under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Social and Community Participation is a disability support designed to help participants connect with others, try new experiences, and feel safe and valued in their community. Community participation can look different for everyone depending on their goals. From grabbing coffee with a friend, joining a netball team, or volunteering locally, to attending a class or going on nature walks, these everyday interactions create real and lasting impact in the lives of NDIS participants.

Social and community participation gives individuals the chance to build skills in real life settings. It encourages communication, cooperation, and problem-solving. Over time, this can improve how someone feels about themselves, how they connect with others, and their ability for independent living. In addition to skill development, regular community involvement can significantly improve a participant’s mental and emotional wellbeing. Community participation also plays a crucial role in promoting inclusion and accessibility. It helps other members of the community to learn to interact inclusively and make community spaces welcoming for all. Under the NDIS, community participation supports may be funded under:
• The Core Supports Budget, under ‘Assistance with Social and Community Participation,’ which provides NDIS disability support workers to help participants access activities.
• The Capacity Building Budget, under ‘Increased Social and Community Participation,’ which funds individual skill development to build independence and confidence.
These disability supports must be linked to the participant’s goals in their NDIS plan for it to be eligible for funding. Participants can discuss their needs with their NDIA planner, Local Area Coordinator (LAC), or Support Coordinator to ensure the right supports are included.
